Completed Organ Certified as Campaign Passes $3.5m

Sunday, July 23rd was a big day at St. James by-the-Sea, and not just because it was the feast of our patron, St. James the Great. The festival day also marked the official completion of the St. James Organ Project at the same time as the capital campaign reached its goal of $3.5 million.

Our organ consultant, Thomas Sheehan, was on hand to officially certify the organ's successful completion. He spent a full day putting the organ through its paces before signing the certificate of acceptance. "You have an exquisite musical instrument," Sheehan told the congregation. He also accompanied the Parish Choir at the 10am service and played two beautiful organ voluntaries: King David's Dance by Stephen Paulus and the Passacaglia from Leo Sowerby's Symphony in G Major.

Manuel Rosales was also present to represent the vast team of skilled craftsmen, technicians, and suppliers from across the globe. As he was presented with a check for the final payment, Mr. Rosales thanked the congregation for making the new organ possible. "No project can be successful without your enthusiasm and support," he said.

Thanks to the generosity of so many members of the St. James community, this day also marked the success of the $3.5 million capital campaign that included the new organ, improvements to the church building, and an fund for future organ maintenance. Over 300 individuals and families have contributed to the campaign. While the campaign is now a certain success, there is still time to contribute. All gifts are greatly appreciated!

Plans are underway for the inaugural season of services and concerts. Celebrations will begin on Sunday, October 1st with a special service of dedication at 10:00am, and an organ recital at 4:00pm by Ken Cowan, renowned concert organist and professor at Rice University. More information will be forthcoming about this recital and many more exciting events in the 2023-2024 season.
